Kathmandu: The three-day-long Gen-Z movement in Nepal has deepened the political crisis. After a meeting with the army, differences arose among various groups over the name of the interim prime minister, due to which a tense atmosphere prevails in the capital.

Clash between youth and army

On Thursday evening, there was a dispute between two Gen-Z groups. This clash took place in front of the army headquarters, due to which the premises had to be evacuated. During this, the youth also raised strong slogans against the army.

Disagreement over the name of the interim prime minister

On Wednesday, the names of Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah and Gen-Z convenor Sudan Gurung were in discussion for the post of interim prime minister. By evening, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki got the nod for the post, but some groups protested, citing her age and the constitution.

Controversial proposal: Balendra Shah and Kulman Ghising

One group insisted on making Balendra Shah the interim prime minister, but Shah refused and expressed his desire to come into power through elections. After this, the third group proposed the name of Kulman Ghising, the executive chairman of the Electricity Board. Some disagreed with his name, which led to a clash between the leaders of the groups present there.

Strict deployment of army

Senior leaders, including former Prime Ministers KP Sharma Oli, Gana Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prachanda, and Madhav Nepal, were kept under surveillance for security reasons. Curfew and prohibitory orders were extended till Friday morning in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur districts.

Formation of interim government stopped due to non-dissolution of Parliament

The biggest obstacle in the formation of the interim government is the non-dissolution of Parliament. President Ram Chandra Poudel urged all parties to maintain peace and find a solution within the constitutional framework.

Violence and condition of prisoners

So far 34 people have died and 1,338 have been injured in the protests. Three prisoners died during clashes in Ramechhap district jail, and about 15,000 prisoners have absconded so far. Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel's visit to China was cancelled after his protocol letter went viral.
